What is a medical research study?
A medical research study, also known as a clinical trial, is a carefully designed study where some volunteers receive an investigational medication or medical device. The term investigation is used in some trials because it is still being tested to determine how well it works and/or what side effects it may cause. Medical research studies must follow strict rules set by the FDA and must be approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). An IRB is a group, regulated by the Office for Human Research Protections that is responsible for protecting study volunteers and ensuring their ethical and safe treatment. In addition, every study participant is closely monitored with medical tests and exams before, during and sometimes even after the study.
